New York-based, Black-owned jewelry brand Third Crown is known for its geometric and gender-neutral designs. Husband and wife duo Kofi and Kristin Essel, whose pieces are favored by the likes of Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, find inspiration in their architectural surroundings. Now, Third Crown and Jonathan Simkhai are teaming up—a collaboration that began with a select few pieces sold online as part of a holiday shop. From there, the collab expanded and aligned with Simkhai’s vision for his Fall 2021 collection. The collaboration features two styles of earrings, a pendant and bangle, all in either gold or silver.
“I’m so excited about our collaboration with Third Crown,” Simkhai says of the collection. “I was inspired by Kristin and Kofi’s Arc designs specifically and it was an amazing collaborative experience blending our Fall collection inspiration with their designs.”
Third Crown co-designer Kofi also spoke to how the relationship came to be. ”Our friend put us in touch with Jonathan and his team and we were pleasantly surprised that he was interested in our brand.” As longtime fans of Simkhai’s work, they were excited by the opportunity. “Jonathan’s clean lines and design sensibility are a great complement to our geometric style and details.”
Kristin knew their design aesthetics were a match made in heaven. Famous for his laidback elegance, ”Jonathan’s collections always seem to capture a casual sensuality which I love,” Kristin notes. “We think that pairs beautifully with our Arc designs and signature beveling.” We do too!
The old adage rings true: Two heads are better than one. When larger and smaller designers team up, it expands both their consumer base and creates further inspiration behind the collection. The future of the fashion industry relies on positive creative collaboration across brands both big and small, across continents, and across designers in different specialties. The best part? Each brand gets to expand its fanbase. A win-win.
