The rise of post-lockdown self-gifting, from gold jewellery to designer bags

Recently splashed out on a pair of earrings? Or trying to justify some new cashmere? You might not even have noticed it, but much like you would following an accomplishment or for a special occasion, the easing of lockdown has seen a rise in luxe treats.

Think of it as 2020’s answer to the Lipstick Effect, the theory that when facing an economic crisis, shoppers will look to less costly luxury goods, as opposed to huge fashion and beauty investments. Instead of plumping for a break-the-bank leather handbag, we will opt for an expensive lipstick – an extravagant, but doable, pick-me-up.

While the pandemic has meant job and money worries are now reality for a lot of people, it’s meant we’re looking at the little things to brighten our days. Except this time, lipstick is now low on our wishlist of treats, because it doesn’t work with a mask.

Jewellery has topped the list: fashion search engine Lyst has reported that searches for rings and necklaces have gone up 32% and 24% quarter-on-quarter respectively, and Monica Vinader notes that its average checkout value has gone up by £200 since August.
